A note on bassist Derek Nievergelt, whom I’ve previously worked with in Los Angeles at last year’s 3rd Phil-Am Jazz Festival (with drummer Abe Lagrimas, Jr., pianist Tateng Katindig and saxophonist Julius Tolentino).

Derek Nievergelt (from NYC) is a freelance/session musician and was a member of the Terence Blanchard Quintet with whom he toured the world and recorded the Grammy-nominated album for Sony-BMG Masterworks, "Let’s Get Lost" (featuring a stellar cast of vocalists, namely Jane Monheit, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson). He has also performed and/or recorded with Myron Walden, Greg Osby, Edward Simon, Stanley Jordan, Eric Harland, Herbie Hancock, Oleta Adams, Jason Moran, Jojo Mayer, Kenny Wollesson, Eddie Henderson, Graham Haynes, Butch Morris, Bobby Watson and Hillary Maroon. Besides being a member of the Benny Lackner Trio he is currently a member of Jeremy Pelt’s Creation, The Mike Moreno Group, and leads his own group, The Phliptones.

SPACE and EASTERN SKIES: Album Launches

On December 14, 2007, CANDID RECORDS PHILS., the Philippine subsidiary of the prestigious U.K.-based jazz record company, shall be launching the latest albums by two of the Philippines' world-class jazz talents:

MISHKA ADAMS, the young chanteuse of mixed British and Filipino parentage, had recorded an outstanding mix of modern standards and original compositions in England, backed by some of the most respected musicians in the London jazz scene. Her album, "SPACE", will establish Mishka Adams at the forefront of the Philippines' internationally-renowned singers.

JOHNNY ALEGRE, the innovative jazz composer and guitarist, had recorded a joyous suite of symphonic jazz originals together with the young, exemplary conductor Gerard Salonga and his Global Studio Orchestra. The album, "EASTERN SKIES", features the arrangements of Ria Villena-Osorio and the pick of Manila's finest jazz musicians and classical ensemble players. It is being primed for distribution in the Philippines and the U.K.

CANDID RECORDS will simultaneously launch these two groundbreaking albums on December 14 at the GREENBELT-3 FOUNTAIN AREA in AYALA CENTER MAKATI.

Gigs in November ++

Greetings from Johnny Alegre AFFINITY. Here's the AFFINITY monthly gig schedule for November. It's a mixed bag of Production Nights where we play one short set only (because we share the stage with other bands) in 19East (Sucat) and Club Dredd (Eastwood), together with an upscale show we're having at Ratsky: T.Morato; and then lastly an Open Jam at Mag:net (Katipunan) that we're hosting for Koko Bermejo (our original drummer, who's played with us for five years straight, until he decided to move Stateside).

After this, the first week of December (7-9), Jazzphil-USA will host the 3rd Fil-Am Jazz Festival at the Catalina Bar in Hollywood. Check out Catalina's website for developments. Details to follow on this.

Quickly after, we will be highlighting this year on December 14, 2007 at the annual Candid Jazz Festival. This will be a very special event as Candid Records Philippines launches two albums:

MISHKA ADAMS’ amazing new album that she recorded in England, entitled “SPACE”. Her new material is absolutely stunning and she is immaculately accompanied by and interplayed with by some of the finest jazz musicians from the U.K.

And the second album of the Johnny Alegre AFFINITY (with Gerard Salonga’s Global Studio Orchestra) entitled “EASTERN SKIES” featuring Johnny Alegre (guitar/compositions), Tots Tolentino (saxophones), Colby dela Calzada (bass), Koko Bermejo (drums), Joey Quirino (piano) and the outstanding big band and symphonic arrangements of Ria Villena-Osorio. The twin launch event will be held at the Teatrino Theater and Bar in Greenhills.
